Land of Lincoln Goodwill Industries in partnership with the Journal-Courier and electronics manufacturer Dell will host an electronics recycling event in Jacksonville on April 23.
The event is free and people can drive up and drop off electronics in the parking lot at the Jacksonville Goodwill Store at 1809 W. Morton Ave. from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Old and broken computers and computer peripherals, cellphones, stereo equipment, printers, fax machines, VCR and DVD players and other small electronics will be accepted. Older tube-type computer monitors will be accepted, but tube-type televisions will not because of the toxic levels of mercury and lead in such units.
Goodwill employees and volunteers will assist in removing items from cars and provide receipts for tax purposes. All donated electronics will be safely recycled by Dell, diverting the items from landfills.
Consumers are reminded to remove personal data from hard drives or other storage media before donating.
Dell compensates Goodwill for the electronics donated and that revenue goes to Goodwill programs that train and put people to work.
