Group opposing Lucas museum OKs stay

A nonprofit suing to stop plans by “Star Wars” creator George Lucas for a lakefront museum by the Chicago Bears’ stadium says it’s not enthusiastic about an alternate site nearby.

A Friends of the Parks statement Tuesday comes after the city asked a federal judge to stay the litigation for 30 days. The city wants to explore putting the $400 million art museum where part of the McCormick Place convention complex now stands.

The group says it’s OK with a stay. It doesn’t outright reject the alternate site but says the museum should be away from the lakefront entirely. It opposes the Soldier Field location, arguing it violates lakefront-development restrictions.

McCormick Place is also by the lake. But construction would involve replacing existing structures, not building where nothing currently stands.
