Schools in the region are nearing summer break, but the Art Association of Jacksonville is simply gearing up for its next round of art classes at the David Strawn Art Gallery.
An adult workshop on using the wet felting technique to create a hat will be offered from 1 to 3:30 p.m. June 18 and 25.
Instructor Kris Allen will show students how to use warm, soapy water and llama fibers to create art pieces to wear, carry or display. No knitting is involved and no fiber art experience is required.
Tuition, which covers both days and all supplies, is $60 for association members and $65 for non-members. The class is limited to eight students.
Kirby Drennan will lead a six-week pottery class beginning June 23.
Beginning and continuing pottery students will explore hand-building, use of the wheel, glazing and firing. Session No. 1 will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursdays. Session No. 2 will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays.
Tuition is $50 for members and $55 for non-members, and the class is limited to eight students. Materials will be provided by the association.
Daytime classes aimed at younger students will begin June 20.
A “Tots Variety” class for children ages 3 to 5 will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays for six weeks. Students will explore hand-building with clay, painting, drawing and crafts. A live “model” from Drennan’s barnyard will visit during one class session.
Tuition is $35 for members and $40 for non-members. Materials will be provided.
A “Kids Express” class for children ages 6 to 9 will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Mondays for six weeks.
Students will explore various types of painting and drawing, as well as creating wearable art on a T-shirt and makign ceramic pieces for home use. An extra $5 free for the T-shirt is included in the tuition, making it $40 for members and $45 for non-members. Other materials also will be provided.
A basic pottery class for children ages 10 to 12 will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays for six weeks. Tution is $35 for members and $40 for non-members, with materials provided.
