MOUNT STERLING — A group raising money in the fight against cancer is trying something new this year with its annual benefit and Celebration of Life.

The Brown County Against Cancer committee is hosting a dinner and the waiters will be community celebrities.

For seven years, the group has helped those fighting cancer in the county by assisting with bills, gas or other concerns. Under the umbrella of United Way, the group keeps all of the funds it raises within Brown County.

“There’s no income guidelines and we help in whatever way we can,” said committee member Robin Northyup. “We’re all blessed to live in such a giving community like Brown County and because of them we are able to give back 100 percent of our funds to our county.”

Since its inception, the group has given out $100,000 to those with cancer. The benefit dinner Saturday is one of the group’s largest fundraisers.

Each table will be outfitted with a centerpiece that will be auctioned off at the end of the dinner and each will have a theme. Diners will need to haggle with waiters to buy essential dining utilities, such as forks and knives.

The night will kick off at 4:30 Saturday at the Knights of Columbus Hall with a silent auction featuring donated items. Tickets for raffle items, such as a quilt and two Adirondack chairs, will also be available.

The dinner will begin at 5 p.m. and be followed by a memorial to those who lost a battle with cancer or those still undergoing treatment.

Tickets are available by calling 217-257-2934.
