Building life lessons

Parents got to share in lessons taught after hours Tuesday at Salem Lutheran School.

Titled “Construction Night,” about 30 preschoolers and kindergartners gathered in Salem’s classrooms and upper hallway to build things with their parents.

“It’s a social activity for parents and kids to have fun together,” Salem Principal Lisa Aring said. “The theme of this activity was construction.”

Activities included building things with wood, food, shaving cream, paper and various toys, including Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, straw sets and foam blocks.

“All building materials used had never been used in the classroom,” Salem kindergarten teacher Jane Henderson said.

Children also had the chance to build playhouses, cars and garages out of cardboard and then decorate them.

There also was an area where the young students and their parents read construction books together and watched a movie on construction.

“We have an activity like this for this group of students every year,” Aring said.

In recent years, the preschoolers and kindergartners have participated in chocolate night and candy night.

“At those nights, the children and their parents used pieces of chocolate and candy to learn math and reading concepts,” Aring said.

“The social activities are valuable because parents and children can interact with each other, and parents can learn fun ways to teach important and useful concepts to their children,” Aring said.

She added that each social activity includes a Christian project, such as building a prayer from paper or different types of candy.

“The parents always are very appreciative of these activity nights,” Aring said.
